Former Formula One star David Coulthard described how Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna would’ve reacted to Lewis Hamilton’s success.
Following Hamilton’s recent achievements, the F1 legend has been reflecting on the subject and has also predicted how the driver from Stevenage, United Kingdom would’ve fared against Senna and Schumacher.
In an appearance on “Good Morning Britain,” Coulthard even pictured the scenario of Hamilton outperforming Senna on the track with the Brazilian not being too happy about it.
"If they [Hamilton and Senna] were in the same car, if Lewis was leading because somebody has to lead the first corner, then I think neither of the two drivers would finish,” Coulthard predicted. "Ayrton would crash into him, he did it with others. He wouldn't be able to accept that he'd met his equal."
Ar the recent Turkish Grand Prix, Hamilton officially equaled Schumacher’s seven world titles. For the former McLaren representative, the Mercedes superstar will surely beat the German icon.
“There is no question that if Michael [Schumacher] was still racing today, at his prime, he would be staring in the eyes of his equal [Hamilton],” the 49-year-old recently told Stats Perform News (via Grandprix.com).
“Because I think Michael is exceptional and I think Lewis is exceptional,” he continued. “And I think the way that he won his championship in Istanbul was the perfect way to show how good he is.”
Coulthard is not surprised that Hamilton is now on the verge of breaking multiple records. However, he concluded during his discussion on the show that the Englishman is better than Schumacher and Senna simply because he races fair and square.
"There's no question that every generation has their record breakers,” the 13-time Grand Prix winner explained. "If you go through the history of sport, you can pull Jackie Stewart, Jim Clarke, whether it's Senna or Schumacher or whoever. The thing that makes Lewis, for me, the greatest of all is the way he races.”
"He's clean, he's fair, he has a conscience for his fellow racers, which I'm not sure that Michael [Schumacher] and Ayrton [Senna] really had," he added. "They had a ruthlessness to the racing. That's why Lewis is an exceptional racing driver."
This year has been huge for Hamilton. After copping his seventh world title and a series of accomplishments outside Formula One, he is now set for knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.
