Facebook Live New Restriction To Counter Hate Content On Mark Zuckerberg’s Platform
Facebook is bolstering their content policies to prevent hate content from being streamed or uploaded on their social media platform. This new move comes days after the recent Christchurch tragedy in New Zealand. Here’s what we know about Facebook’s new policies.
According to the New Zealand Herald, Facebook chief commanding officer Sheryl Sandberg outlined the actions that will prevent hate content in three steps, namely, “strengthening the rules for using Facebook Live, taking further steps to address hate on our platforms, and supporting the New Zealand community.” So far, Facebook has taken up the responsibility to help out the New Zealand social media and scrub out the footage of the incident on the platform.
So far, Facebook has been working to remove the videos, copies and recreations of this incident on their site. Moreover, the culprit’s Facebook and Instagram accounts have already been deleted.
The social networking platform has also pushed out an artificial intelligence program that detects and deletes any related videos of the incident.
While Facebook has indeed bolstered their site against the incident’s publicity aftermath, they’re also boosting security on the platform against hackers who want to force the hate content back onto the social media platform. Facebook has also improved the review process when it comes to similar hate content, which helps the site remove them faster.
As for other similar hate content, groups and speech, Facebook is also actively removing these from the site. Any support and praise directed towards these groups will be considered a community standards violation, and the user will not be allowed on Facebook anymore.
Facebook also noted that it has improved their standards against content that praise, represent and support white nationalism and separatism on both Instagram and Facebook.
For now, we can be rest assured that livestreaming or posting videos with hate content won’t fly too easily on the platform. However, it’s best to stay vigilant as some malicious users may find a loophole or way to upload tragic events which hurt people, stay unmoderated and reach more users.
