A man in Pakistan has been arrested for allegedly trying to drug and rape a woman while pretending to be a doctor.
The police said the rape attempt was foiled as the woman woke up from her drug-induced sleep in the operation theater. The incident occurred at a private hospital in Balkh Sarwar city Friday, The Express Tribune reported.
The police said the woman had gone to the hospital, seeking treatment for severe abdominal pain. At the hospital, they met Muhammad Imran, who introduced himself to them as a "doctor."
He examined the woman, and said she had an appendix-related issue that required emergency surgery. Imran immediately moved her to the operation theater, where he administered her an unidentified drug. The woman slowly fell into an unconscious state and Imran allegedly tried to assault her, The Express Tribune reported.
However, the effect of the drug wore off, and the woman managed to regain consciousness. She screamed for help, following which her husband and relatives came rushing into the theatre.
Her relatives apprehended Imran and alerted the police, following which he was placed on arrest. However, further investigation proved no doctor by the name of Muhammad Imran worked in the hospital. "So the suspect is not a doctor, to begin with," a police official told the news outlet.
An investigation has been launched into the incident based on the woman's husband's complaint, Times Now News reported.
The health condition of the victim, whose identity has not been revealed, worsened after the incident. "She underwent appendix surgery at a hospital. Therefore, a medical examination could not be conducted. The facts will come to light after further investigation and medical report in the case," a police official told The Express Tribune.
Three months ago, a fake doctor was jailed for 40 years in India after he was convicted of raping two siblings, on the pretext of treating them in 2017. The incident happened after the sisters were taken to the "doctor" by their parents for stomach pain. After a few "consultations," he began sexually assaulting them, and also threatened them with dire consequences if they told anyone about it. However, the siblings, unable to bear the trauma, opened up to their parents. Following this, a police complaint was launched and the man was arrested.
