Fake Heiress Anna Sorokin Breaks Silence On Deportation After Jail Release
Anna Sorokin, the subject of the hit Netflix series "Inventing Anna," has opened up for the first time about her impending deportation after being confined to home arrest following her conditional jail release last Friday.
The 31-year-old fake German heiress said she was against the decision and would rather stay in Manhattan during an interview with The New York Times on the first night of her house arrest.
"Letting them deport me would have been like a sign of capitulation—confirmation of this perception of me as this shallow person who only cares about obscene wealth, and that's just not the reality," she told the outlet.
Sorokin had been in detention for 17 months for defrauding financial institutions to support her extravagant lifestyle. She managed to steal at least $200,000 from banks and friends while scamming her way into New York's elite society before her arrest in 2017.
After being caught, she paid back all her victims, who believed she was a German heiress named Anna Delvey. She was later released from New York State prison in February 2021. However, she was again put behind bars by the U.S. Immigrant and Customs Enforcement in the following month.
This week, Sorokin posted a $10,000 bail and was granted release from jail. However, the ruling stated she would be subject to home arrest and should stay off social media throughout her case proceedings. The ruling also granted the ICE the right to use an ankle monitor to keep a tab on her.
John Sandweg, former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confirmed her release in an email to CNN on Friday.
"She will remain under the supervision of ICE, but will be able to fight her deportation free from physical custody," he said. "We are grateful that the Court agreed that her continued detention is unnecessary."
In her interview with the New York Times, Sorokin also revealed her plans to appeal her conviction. She further shared the details of her upcoming projects, including a podcast and a criminal justice reform to provide assistance to other young women like her.
Sorokin's story inspired television producer Shonda Rhimes to create a mini-series about her. Featuring Julia Garner in the titular role, "Inventing Anna" hit Netflix in February.
