KEY POINTS

  • Items can be repaired in crafting benches
  • Players can use Repair Kits or scrap materials to repair their items
  • Repair Kits are best used in emergencies only

Unlike its predecessor, “Fallout 76” has a gear condition and repair mechanic that plays a crucial part in combat. Failing to maintain equipped items will eventually cause them to break, making them practically useless.

It’s ironic that such an important mechanic isn’t clearly taught to players at the start of the game. Many beginners may walk up to a workbench and think that Repair Kits are the only way to fix damaged items. But this isn’t the case.

Instead of cannibalizing weapons like in “Fallout 3,” players will be able to use scrap materials to repair their items in “Fallout 76.”

To do this, head to any weapon, armor or tinker bench. Then, press the button for the prompt that says “Modify/Repair.” On PC, this defaults to the Space bar. From this menu, players will be able to pick what gear piece they want to fix up.

Press the button for the “Inspect/Repair” option found on the bottom of the UI, then press the “Workbench Repair” button (“R” on PC). This opens up a prompt that lets players use scrap to repair their weapons.

With this in mind, always be on the lookout for junk items that can be used for repairs. Players can burn through resources very quickly. To make sorting through lootable trash easier, make sure to mark components like adhesives, steel or aluminum in crafting benches.

Alternatively, players can always use Repair Kits to fix their gear. These items are rare, however, since they can only be obtained from the in-game shop or as rewards from the seasonal scoreboard.

Improved Repair Kits sometimes drop from the Scorched Earth, Project Paradise and Encryptid events, so try to participate in them regularly for a shot at getting some free kits.

The main appeal of Repair Kits is that they can be used anywhere, anytime. As such, players who aren’t actively farming for Repair Kits should try to save these for emergencies only, such as when diving into dungeons or going on long treks where crafting benches are scarce.

Lastly, investing in the Scrapper perk may be worthwhile since it increases material yields when destroying equipment.
