KEY POINTS

  • "The Color Purple" is a Pulitzer prize-winning book by Alice Walker
  • Barrino made her Broadway debut in 2007 in the musical adaptation
  • Oprah Winfrey will produce the upcoming musical film

“American Idol” alum Fantasia Barrino has been cast for the role of Celie in the musical film adaptation of “The Color Purple.”

Barrino previously played Celie in the Tony-winning Broadway run of “The Color Purple” in 2007.

The cast announcement was made on Thursday’s episode of ABC's “Soul Of A Nation.” Oprah Winfrey will produce the upcoming musical film.

Winfrey previously starred in Steven Spielberg's 1985 movie adaptation as Sofia opposite Whoopi Goldberg, who played Celie.

The original Broadway musical was an adaptation of the Pulitzer-prize winning 1982 novel by Alice Walker. It tells the story of a woman named Celie who was impregnated by her father at the age of 14. It revolves around her struggles as an African American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.

“The Color Purple” was also Barrino’s Broadway debut where she earned great reviews for her performance.

"If you really put yourself in her shoes, that can be very tiring," Barrino told Playbill.com, as reported by People. "It can take a lot of energy out of you. I know when I get off the stage at night from shows, I'm exhausted. I run to my room, and I fall on the couch, and I have to take at least about ten minutes to wind down and to get my thoughts together and come out of the part of Celie."

The “Lose To Win” singer described the musical as “very inspirational.”

"I had seen the movie, but it's such an inspirational play," she said in 2007. "I was crying. I was saying, 'Oh, Lord, I hope I'm not the only one crying!'"

Barrino said Winfrey, who also produced the Tony Award-winning musical, gave her a lot of advice after she received the news that the talk show host has chosen her to star in the new movie adaptation. "Oprah gave me a lot of advice. She sat me down … Just, you know, how a lady should carry herself. How to manage your money. How to not put your trust in everybody. Just watch your back," Barrino said in 2008.

Danielle Brooks, 32, who was also in the same musical for the role of Sofia, will reprise her role in the movie. Brooks was first seen in the comedy drama, “Orange Is The New Black” as Tasha Jefferson. Currently, she stars alongside John Cena in HBO Max’s “Peacemaker.”
