Father, 3-Year-Old Daughter Killed After Speeding Car Rams Into California Apartment
A California father and his 3-year-old daughter were killed after a pickup truck crashed into their Long Beach apartment building, authorities said.
The 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and his 3-year-old daughter was rushed to a local hospital, Los Angeles Times reported. The child succumbed to her injuries.
The incident took place just after 10 p.m. E.T. Tuesday at the residential complex near Artesia Boulevard and Rose Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release.
The deceased man was identified as Jose Palacios Gonzalez by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, but the little girl's name was not released. A GoFundMe page was set up for the family where the deceased girl was identified as Samantha.
Investigators believe the accident was the result of overspeeding. A preliminary investigation found that the truck was heading north on Rose Avenue when it swerved off the road and hit the apartment building.
The impact was so severe that the truck tore through the building wall and entered a bedroom where the toddler was sitting, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Grainy footage from the scene obtained by KTLA-TV showed the 2014 Dodge Ram pickup halfway inside the apartment.
Cops are trying to locate the driver who fled on foot after the crash, believed to be 20 to 25 years old, according to Los Angeles Times.
Samantha’s mom, who wasn't home at the time of the crash, was inconsolable after witnessing her husband and daughter pinned underneath a truck. "The mother of the baby, she say, 'Help, help me, please, my baby,'" Neldi Moran, a neighbor, recalled the woman saying.
Neighbors were struggling to come to terms with the tragic deaths, especially that of the 3-year-old girl. "I have a granddaughter that’s almost the same age and that’s what hurts me the most because that little girl just starting living and to lose her life like that and to a person who did that not stay at the scene and just run away? That breaks my heart," said Veronica Quezada, a neighbor.
