A Kentucky man who was arrested for the death of his 7-week-lold daughter admitted to shaking the baby and throwing her on the floor, police said.
Del'shawn Banks, a 23-year-old man from Louiseville, was arrested Monday after the baby died of skull fractures and severe head injuries last week.
Banks reportedly took his unresponsive daughter to a hospital on June 17. Doctors tried to perform life-saving measures on the child but could not revive her. Hospital authorities informed the police after they ruled the injuries as "abusive head trauma," reported Lexington Herald-Leader.
During a police interview, Banks confessed that he had shaken the baby and thrown her on the ground. The infant's death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy report confirmed Monday that the infant's injuries were consistent with what Banks described.
However, the investigators did not reveal the possible motive behind the alleged murder. The exact date and location of the domestic violence were not disclosed, either.
Cortney Jones, the infant's mother, was in a hospital with complications from her delivery when she got a call from Banks informing the child's death. "It makes me disgusted, it makes me sick," Jones told the news outlet WLKY.
"How can you hurt your own child? How do you hurt someone that looks just like you? A part of you, your blood, your sweat your tears, your everything. How do you do that?" she told the publication.
Banks has been charged with one count of murder-domestic violence, according to Louisville Metro Police Department.
During an arraignment at Jefferson District Court Tuesday, Banks entered a not guilty plea. The court has set the bond at $250,000.
A preliminary hearing for the case has been scheduled for June 30.
Last week, a mother from New Mexico was sentenced to 12 years in jail for the death of her 7-week-old girl. The severely malnourished baby died of brain hemorrhage and shaken baby syndrome in 2018. The infant's mother, Carcia Ceballos of Las Cruces, was found guilty in April on one count of intentional or reckless abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm. Marcus Minnick, the baby's father, was also arrested on felony child abuse charges and is awaiting trial in December.
