A couple in Georgia was arrested for allegedly murdering their 4-week-old infant. Police said a large amount of alcohol was found in the infant’s system after the father allegedly spiked the baby’s bottle with alcohol.
Deputies came to know about the incident after parents, Sydnei Dunn, 24, and Marquis Colvin, 25, took their unresponsive baby to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on April 13, according to CBS46.
The staff at the hospital grew suspicious and called the police when “the child’s condition did not make sense,” Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday on Facebook.
“The authorities there thankfully noticed that something wasn't right with what the family was saying occurred, in connection with the way the child actually was looking and feeling," Public Information Officer Sergeant Ashley Henson told 11Alive.
Detectives began investigating and spoke to Dunn, who initially said she consumed a large amount of alcohol the day before and suggested the child may have gotten alcohol poisoning from breastfeeding. She later said Colvin had put added alcohol in the baby’s bottle. Dunn told detectives that the child became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital.
The infant went into cardiac arrest because of the quantity of alcohol consumed, the arrest warrants said.
"With an alcohol level four times that of what an adult could be charged with DUI... even for an adult, that's a significant amount, but for a four-week-old child, good grief," Sgt. Henson added.
Detectives also found a firearm at the parents’ residence in Hiram and said Colvin was not allowed to be near or possess a firearm because he is a convicted felon.
One neighbor called the deceased baby’s parents “sick” after hearing about the incident.
"A baby!? Oh my god... feeding a baby alcohol? That is wild. That’s wild,” the neighbor told 11Alive. “They’re sick. This is a very quiet neighborhood... There’s nothing going on here. Nothing.”
The neighbor revealed that Dunn and Colvin shared the house with another couple that had two children of their own. Dunn and Colvin mostly kept to themselves and stayed in the home’s basement, she added.
"I did not see them I did not know them," the neighbor told the outlet.
Dunn and Colvin were arrested on April 14 and the couple faces a slew of charges that include malice murder, second-degree murder and first-degree cruelty to children, among others. They are being held in the Paulding County Jail without bond.
“Knowing that they're in custody, that is comforting, but just, it's just such a sad and tragic situation," Sgt. Henson told the outlet.
