Father Punches, Kicks His Daughter Repeatedly On Tennis Court For Refusing To Continue Playing
A video shared on social media has captured a Chinese father punching and kicking his daughter at a tennis club in Serbia.
The father was arrested and charged with domestic violence offenses in connection with the incident.
Igor Jurić, a child abuse activist, shared the video online showing the father punching and kicking his daughter repeatedly and knocking her to the ground during tennis practice in Belgrade, Tennis Tonic reported Monday.
"Another brutal violence by a father against his daughter. I received information that it was a family coming from China. We will file criminal charges against this monster as well," read the translation of the tweet posted by Jurić.
It is believed the victim's tennis coach is her father and she was being punished for poor performance on the court, Marca reported.
Many on social media condemned the actions of the father, who was identified in some reports as WL.
"This is absolutely unacceptable. Horrible. No other word," tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou commented on the video. "We have to eradicate any kind of abuse on children whether they are physical or psychological. It touches every sector of our civil society. Not only tennis. Let's think how we can eradicate it in our sport."
"I think it would be important for our children to get involved and request a report from the Serbian Tennis Association," Jurić said in a follow-up tweet.
Serbian news source Mondo said the father defended his actions and tried to use cultural differences to justify his behavior, The Telegraph reported.
He said his daughter refused to continue her training on what was referred to as a critical day. The father said he beat her up because he wanted his daughter to return to the field but claimed he did not intend to hurt her.
He also noted that it is tradition to respect hierarchy in China and that such things are allowed in his country.
The father was arrested and charged, and the case was reportedly heard before the First Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade.
The acting deputy proposed to the court that the father should be kept in custody because he poses a risk of escaping and because of the nature of the attack on his daughter.
