A female police officer proposed to a wanted criminal and arrested him when he arrived at a temple to meet her Thursday. The incident took place in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

According to local reports, Balkishan Chaubey was wanted for 16 different cases including murder and had a reward of $140 on his head. Police received information that the criminal was looking for a woman for marriage and decided to catch him by laying a trap of fake marriage. A woman police officer then contacted Chaubey.

“Police arranged a SIM card of New Delhi circle in the name of a woman laborer from Bundelkhand, who is presently living in New Delhi. The woman sub-inspector called Chaubey and said she mistakenly dialed his number. Chaubey asked her whereabouts and later he checked the credentials of the number. Chaubey called her back and they started talking to each other. After a week, the woman proposed marriage to him,” police said.

On Thursday, the police officer and the criminal decided to meet in a temple for the official announcement of their wedding, where he was arrested.

“The woman sub-inspector reached there with other police personnel in civil dress. When Chaubey reached the temple, police arrested him on Thursday,” police said. The man remained in custody as of Sunday.
