Ferdinand Urges Manchester United To Sign $90M Star Who Can 'Bring Trophies' Back
KEY POINTS
- Erling Haaland is contracted with Dortmund until 2024
- Manchester United had failed to sign him last year in January
- He has scored 31 goals in 30 competitive games this season
Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has urged the Red Devils to sign Erling Haaland ahead of the 2021 summer transfer window.
Ferdinand has asked Manchester United to "give everything" to land Borussia Dortmund forward Haaland at Old Trafford as he believes the Norwegian can "bring trophies" back to the club.
Haaland is currently contracted with Dortmund until 2024 but has been linked with a move away from the German club this summer. The young forward, who has netted 31 goals in as many as 30 competitive matches this season for Dortmund, is being chased by several top European clubs, including Manchester sides (City and United), Liverpool FC, and FC Barcelona.
The 42-year-old center-back Ferdinand, who played for the Red Devils for 12 long years, believes that Haaland belongs to England, a place he was born and brought up.
"You know what, they’ve just got to go and give everything to get Haaland, I don’t care. I don’t like to talk about players coming from other teams but this guy man, we can’t afford to let this guy go anywhere else. His only destination is England, that’s the only place he’s going. If he goes anywhere else I’d be so surprised. Born here, born and bred. He obviously loves English football, his dad played here. I’m sure it’s one of his dreams to come and play in England. Why not in the red shirt at Old Trafford? Be the guy that brings trophies back to Man United and brings the successful period back. Be that guy," Ferdinand told on his YouTube channel.
Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried his best to sign his compatriot during the 2020 January transfer window. Unfortunately, the Premier League side had failed to materialize a deal, and instead, Haaland was roped in by Dortmund.
The 20-year-old Haaland has a release clause of around $90 million at Dortmund. It was earlier reported that Barcelona’s new chief Joan Laporta wants to rebuild the Catalans squad around their skipper Lionel Messi and Haaland. Laporta is counting on his good relationship with Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola in his attempt to bring Haaland to Camp Nou.
Meanwhile, it was previously revealed that Premier League leaders Manchester City have snubbed their chase of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Kylian Mbappe because of the player’s high wages and have now shifted focus to Haaland, whose salary bracket is believed to be much less than Mbappe.
