  • Ferrari officials say Mick Schumacher would be a good candidate for a seat at Formula One
  • Michael Schumacher, finished 12th overall in his maiden Formula 2 season in 2019
  • Team principal, Binotto, claimed Ferrari was expecting a lot from Schumacher in the 2020 season

Several officials, including Mattia Binotto, believe Ferrari’s junior driver, Mick Schumacher would be a good candidate for a seat at Formula One in the future.

Son of the seven-time champion, Michael Schumacher, finished 12th overall in his maiden Formula 2 season in 2019. He scored a victory in the reversed grid race in the Hungaroring.

The young Schumacher also completed his first two official F1 test days last year running first for Ferrari, then Alfa Romeo at the post-Bahrain Grand Prix test in April.

Team principal, Binotto, claimed Ferrari was expecting a lot from Schumacher in the 2020 season.

He said they are quite proud of having made him a part of the FDA.

It is not only because he is Michael Schumacher’s son but also because he believes he is a good driver that performed well even in that season.

Binotto added that if one were to consider the standings, there are many experienced drivers on top, but Schumacher had one season where he could gain some experience.

He was a rookie, so Binotto believes the next season is going to be essential for Schumacher to understand how much he is progressing.

Ferrari is expecting a lot from the next year because he will have a season of experience, and they are very sure he will be a great candidate for Formula One.

It does fall into play, considering Charles LeClerc had made an impression at the team following an eventful 2019 season.

Sebastian Vettel is also looking towards retirement from the sport, and this could be the case following the 2020 season.

A duo composed of LeClerc and Schumacher may be the ideal dream team to bring into the 2021 season.

Binotto clarified though the aim of the FDA is finding the next talent for Ferrari and Schumacher is part of the FDA because they believe he has the talent to stay within the group.

In 2021, the experience from drivers is going to be significant, according to Ferrari, because it is a new type of car.

Media outlet sources indicate that Schumacher was being evaluated for the second Alfa Romeo seating as well. However, a combination of his Formula 2 results and Antonio Giovinazzi’s improved form in the second half of the season meant the Italian was given another year to join Formula One.

Schumacher also told media outlets that Formula 2 is going to have the new 18 inch tires, which is a positive for him as that will be the standard for Formula One in the 2021 season.
