A 13-year-old girl was stabbed in a fight with a fifth-grader at a Cleveland elementary school.
The victim was stabbed in the neck and chin after a fight broke out in the cafeteria of the Holy Name Elementary School, located on Broadway Avenue, at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The fifth-grader was arrested at the school property, police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said, according to the New York Post. Cops also found a knife at the scene.
The stabbed teenager was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and is expected to survive, the police said.
The incident raised concern among the families who send their kids to the Catholic K-8th grade school.
“My grandson, he called me and said, ‘Grandma, someone just got stabbed.’ And I said, ‘TJ, are you sure?’” Cheir Johnson, the grandmother of a 7th-grade student, told News 5 Cleveland.
“I kind of freaked out,” Tyrone Blackshear, parent of a kindergartner and uncle of a fifth-grader, told the outlet. “You don’t know if it’s your kid, if your kid was involved and stuff like that, and on top of that, how close your kid was. For your kid to even sit there and see that, that’s kind of a scary thing, as a parent, to go through.”
Family members were reportedly shocked by the age of the children involved in the violence.
“I just hate that the kids are so young, so young,” Johnson said. “It’s something you don’t even want to think about happening at an elementary school," Blackshear added. "Everything is kind of mind-boggling right now."
The school sent letters to families that said the administrators spoke to all the students following the incident before they were temporarily sent to their classes. The kids were eventually sent back home.
The school said classes would resume Monday in light of the stabbing incident.
“Altercations between students are not tolerated at Holy Name Elementary School,” read a statement released by the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. “Holy Name administrators will cooperate with the Cleveland Police in investigating this matter and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken once the school has completed its investigation.”
"Holy Name Elementary School works hard to create a safe and healthy environment for its students. Our school community prays for the swift recovery of the student who was injured," the statement continued.
The incident is under investigation.
