‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Movie: Which ‘Avengers 2’ Star 'Never' Wanted To Be Christian Grey?
Between starring in one of the biggest superhero franchises or in an adaptation of a best-selling erotic novel, Aaron Taylor-Johnson apparently prefers the former -- not that there was even a choice. The “Avengers: Age of Ultron” actor recently explained why he could have never starred in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which was directed by his wife, Sam Taylor-Johnson.
"No, never! I think there would have been a lot of unhappy fans of the book," the 24-year-old British actor told Marie Claire U.K. (via MTV). "We both read it and knew right then that when she went into direct it, I wouldn't be the one to step into those shoes. And that was fine.”
Taylor-Johnson, who plays Quicksilver in the “Avengers” sequel, said it wasn't really an option for him to work on “Fifty Shades of Grey.” A year ago, he was asked the same question and said it would be a bit too suspicious for the director to cast her husband, who is half her age.
“I think ["Fifty Shades of Grey"] would have been the wrong kind of hype to bring towards us,” he told Nylon Guys magazine. “It would have been kind of funny that this character that all these women fancy – he’s one in a million – and my wife picks her husband to play the part?”
The actor and director met while working together on the 2009 John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy.” If Taylor-Johnson wanted to work with the mother of his two children again, it’s probably for the best that he didn’t join “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Sam Taylor-Johnson has left the trilogy after one film. The split is rumored to be due to creative differences with “Fifty Shades” author E.L. James.
The actor didn’t address his wife’s departure from the wildly successful franchise, but he said: “It didn't feel like one of us was like, ‘I really wanted to do that.' I'm obviously really, really proud of Sam and it was great to see her take that project and make it her own, and not have to feel like just because there's a role. ... I feel like I'm too young for that role anyway!"
It might have been a little hard for audiences to buy a 24-year-old as a self-made millionaire. Taylor-Johnson is eight years younger than Jamie Dornan, 32, who ultimately got the role of the BDSM-loving businessman. Dornan will appear in the next film, “Fifty Shades Darker,” but a release date has not been announced.
