KEY POINTS
- Douglas Luiz has just a year left on his contract with Aston Villa
- Villa are open to selling Luiz before the summer window closes
- Luiz has made 4 appearances for Villa this season
Liverpool FC have reportedly made an offer for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz in the final hours of the 2022 summer window.
The deadline day of the summer market is on Thursday. Liverpool have approached Aston Villa with a $23 million offer for Luiz, according to Brazilian journalist Matheus Leal, who has a credible record in soccer's transfer market. International Business Times, however, could not verify it independently.
The Brazilian journalist has also claimed that Aston Villa are open to selling Luiz, who has just a year left on his contract, but the Villa Park side will also try to get Liverpool to improve their offer.
Even Atletico Madrid are interested in securing Luiz, who is into his fourth season at Aston Villa, according to Goal.com.
The 24-year-old Luiz has made four appearances for Aston Villa in the ongoing season in all competitions and has also contributed with a goal that came in a League Cup game.
Last season, Luiz played 35 matches for Aston Villa across all competitions and netted two goals and provided three assists as the Steven Gerrard-managed club finished 14th in the Premier League.
Just four games into the 2022-23 campaign, Liverpool are dealing with injuries, especially in the midfield department, with Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all currently out of action owing to health issues.
However, ahead of their upcoming clash with Newcastle United, Klopp has confirmed that Jones has returned to training, along with center-back Joel Matip. However, the rest of the said players will take time to return to action.
In a recent interview, Klopp admitted they he certainly wants to strengthen his midfield before the 2022 summer window closes, but only if he finds the right player. The German boss has a few midfield targets in mind, but they all have "issues" preventing a move.
"We are not out. I couldn't tell you [names], even if I wanted to. It's really difficult because, for sure there are a few players out there who would be the right ones, but they have different issues. Some of them are contracts, clubs don't want to sell. There's still time, but when it's over and we've signed or not signed [a new player], I'm really happy because it means we can stop thinking about it," said Klopp, according to Teamtalk.
Liverpool are scheduled to host Newcastle on Wednesday at Anfield in the Premier League. The Reds have so far managed just one win in four league games. After two draws and a defeat, Klopp and company bounced back in style as they thrashed Bournemouth 9-0 last week.
