FINAL SCORE: Chelsea Prevail Over Manchester United, 2-1
Chelsea may finally have their swagger back after a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
A rather questionable penalty call in the 79th minute, in which defender Chris Smalling was whistled for bringing down Yuri Zhirkov in the box, set up a Frank Lampard goal, as Chelsea prevailed over their rivals.
Chelsea equalized in the 54th minute when a cross led to a header by Branislav Ivanovic, who knocked it backward inside the box. The ball hung in the air for what probably seemed like eternity for goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, before defender David Luiz timed his volley perfectly with a strike that found its way inside the near post.
Minutes later, Luiz gave a harsh foul to Wayne Rooney inside the center circle.
Rooney started the scoring for Manchester United with a perfectly struck low ball in the 29th minute that fit between the post and Petr Cech's outstretched arm.
Rooney has been playing in top form lately, with three goals in three-straight Premier League matches.
Both teams had ample opportunities to score.
Chelsea had a chance to go up 3-1 in the 82nd minute, when Zhirkov ripped a ball that was blocked by defender Nemanja Vidic, but managed to hit the post.
In the 75th minute, Rooney was inside the box and did a quick turn and strike that went directly towards Cech.
In the 64th minute, Rooney dribbled the ball along the left side, and lifted a cross waist level that went past Cech and was nearly knocked in by John Terry.
Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic had a golden opportunity in the 40th minute when a questionable foul resulted in a Frank Lampard free kick that Edwin Van der Sar was able to block. Ivanovic attempted to knock in the rebound, but Van der Sar denied him, and the ball was cleared.
Chelsea attacker Florent Malouda had a great chance in the fifth minute, but his hard-hit shot from the center-field channel was straight at Van der Sar.
In the 16th minute, a cross from Patrice Evra only needed a touch from Rooney, but the forward couldn't reach the ball in time to put the Red Devils ahead.
A strategic cross by Darren Fletcher was cleared by David Luiz in the 26th minute.
Many eyes were on Chelsea forward Fernando Torres and Manchester United central defender Vidic. The two have had interesting encounters when Torres played for Liverpool, but the only climatic occurrence happened in stoppage time, with Vidic picking up his second yellow of the match for tugging on Ramires's shorts just outside the box.
Yet again, Torres failed to score.
The match was also notable for its starting lineups. It was a bit of a surprise that Sir Alex Ferguson gave the nod to Javier Hernandez over Dimitar Berbatov.
Didier Drogba started the game on the bench in a move by Carlo Ancelotti that has far-reaching ramifications. According to the Daily Mail, Drogba has considered leaving Chelsea this summer if he didn't start this match.
Both Berbatove and Drogba were substituted in, but both had little impact on the match.
