The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals to overturn the results of the presidential election in five battleground states, marking an end to a long legal battle to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory.

The justices on the Supreme Court rejected appeals challenging the election results in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Bloomberg reported. Biden secured a victory in those states by narrow margins, prompting supporters of former President Donald Trump to declare the election was rigged. All five of those states went to Trump in the 2016 election.

Trump himself continued to suggest, without evidence, that the Nov. 3 contest was fraudulent. Two of the cases turned away by the high court were filed by the former president, with the rest coming from his allies in the Republican Party.

In the case in Pennsylvania, the court ruled the challenge was moot because Biden has already assumed office. But in a dissent, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said questions about the election remained.

"We failed to settle this dispute before the election, and thus provide clear rules. Now we again fail to provide clear rules for future elections," CBS News cited his opinion as stating. "The decision to leave election law hidden beneath a shroud of doubt is baffling. By doing nothing, we invite further confusion and erosion of voter confidence. Our fellow citizens deserve better and expect more of us."

Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, a close confidant of Trump, announced an investigation by the Justice Department found no evidence of widespread voter fraud during the 2020 election.

But according to Politico, while none of the disputed state election results can undermine Biden’s presidency alone, Trump could secure at least one more day in court. In a separate case, the Supreme Court in March hears a Trump request to rule on his unsuccessful challenge to voting laws in Wisconsin.

And the issue still has legal ramifications. Dominion Voting Systems has filed defamation charges against Rudy Giuliani, who served as Trump’s personal attorney, and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, an ardent supporter of the former president, for perpetuating claims of voter fraud.
