Firefighters, EMS Workers Help Woman Deliver Baby In Ambulance Parked On Roadside
Firefighters and emergency medical technicians who picked up a woman in labor from a North Carolina home realized they wouldn't reach the hospital in time, so they helped her deliver the baby safely inside the ambulance while it was parked on the side of the road.
The Weaverville Fire Department and a Reems Creek ambulance received a call Wednesday morning about a woman in labor and arrived to find the pregnant woman on the porch of her house in Buncombe County.
The crew placed the woman inside the ambulance and began driving her to the hospital. However, they had to pull over within five minutes because they quickly realized they wouldn't get to the hospital in time, WSPA reported.
The crew helped the woman safely deliver a baby girl in the ambulance on the side of the road. The baby, weighing 7 pounds and 15 ounces at birth, is doing well along with the mother.
"Today didn't start out as your normal day," Reems Creek Fire Department wrote in a news release posted on Facebook.
"The crews did an amazing job and their training kicked in at a moments notice," the department added.
The Town of Weaverville Fire Department also announced the good news on Facebook and called it "one of the most rewarding calls we can respond to."
"It is always an honor and pleasure to assist with bringing a life into the world, we see a lot of horrible things but this is one of the most rewarding calls we can respond to," the department noted in its post.
The mother, who experienced the unusual arrival of her daughter into this world, thanked the crew by commenting on the Town of Weaverville Fire Department's Facebook post, according to the Charlotte Observer.
"You guys were amazing and helped me stay calm even through the most painful experiences a mother can go through!! Thank you so much," she wrote, as per the outlet.
Several Facebook users commented on the department's post and praised the crew for their work.
"Although some may not think you need training to do your job I beg to differ!! Today was a prime example. You are a great bunch of guys and your outline fire departments thank you for all you do!!!" one netizen said.
Another person commented, "Thank you all for being highly trained to respond to a variety of emergencies. You are valued members of the community and without you the community would suffer."
