The first-ever expansion for “Doom Eternal” is set to be released on October 20 as Doomguy will once again take on the monstrous hordes of hell with carnage and reckless abandon.

Bethesda and id Software revealed “The Ancient Gods: Part One” at the Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2020 as the first of two DLC packs of “Doom Eternal,” the hit first-person shooter following 2016’s “Doom” and the fifth installment of the game’s storied franchise.

But while most players would think that DLCs would require having the original game or at least completing the main campaign, Eurogamer said “The Ancient Gods: Part One” will be available as a standalone game, meaning that players can still scour through the Doom universe even if they don’t have the base game.

In an interview with GameSpot, id Software designer Kevin Cloud, who’s responsible for making many of the creative decisions for the game, said Doom 4 was canceled because it did not feel like a Doom game. id Software

Executive producer Marty Stratton told PCGamesN that they want to reach more players that they made the DLC a bit special.

“When we look at how many people have played through the game we have a large percentage – higher that 2016 – that have completed it, so you’re always looking at that and seeing how far players make it through the game,” said Stratton.

At the same time, game director Hugo Martin considers “The Ancient Gods” as big as “Doom Eternal.”

“Most people would associate DLC with being of smaller scope – it’s kind of like the made for TV version of the movie and the movie was the main game. For us, this is very much like a two-part film – this is every bit as grand as the main game was,” said Martin.

The trailer itself is pretty much Doom-ish right from the get-go with Doomguy slaying hellish creatures with his arsenal of weapons. Players can and will expect tons of blood, explosions and bullets plus the fact that they will be facing not one, but two Marauders, according to Engadget.

“the Ancient Gods: Part One” will drop on October 20 as part of “Doom Eternal’s” Season One Pass. The DLC is priced at $19.99 for its standalone version and will offer players access to Battlemode, 2v1 mode of “Doom Eternal” and best-of-five rounds multiplayer matches, Polygon reported.
