Years after it was first announced, “The Outlast Trials” has finally been revealed via a short teaser trailer at Gamescom, giving players a peek into what the game has to offer.

The cooperative spin-off of the hit horror game series “Outlast” was first teased back in 2019, with nothing but a promotional image and a promise that it was going to be an experience that was meant to be enjoyed with friends. Now, the first snippet of “The Outlast Trials’” gameplay has been revealed, showing off a creepy setting with multiple monsters to run and hide from.

The game appears to have no direct relation to the first two “Outlast” titles other than being set in the late Cold War era of the same universe. In “The Outlast Trials,” players take the role of “volunteers,” people who were abducted by the Murkoff Corporation to participate in experiments that are designed to be physically and mentally straining.

Based on the trailer, “The Outlast Trials” will remain mostly similar to the previous games. Players will still have to rely on outwitting or outrunning the many threats that are chasing after them, but they will have a few options to fend attackers off, such as by using land mines or by throwing items to temporarily stun monsters.

Some of the monsters don’t seem to be like any of the ones found in the previous “Outlast” games. One enemy appears to be a large-yet-lanky man wielding a two-handed axe while others look like different versions of the aberrant asylum patients from the first “Outlast.” There is also an enemy type that hides inside lockers that will make players think twice before hiding in one.

However, game developer Red Barrels noted that players will be “tormented by iconic characters” in “The Outlast Trials,” which may mean that old enemy types might reappear in the game.

Not much else is known about the gameplay but so far, “The Outlast Trials” looks like a refined version of the original games that will hopefully revitalize the co-op horror genre. The game is due out sometime next year.
