First Mexican World Heavyweight Champion Believes Pacquiao Will Win If Mayweather Rematch Happens
Following another Manny Pacquiao fight, along comes talk of a potential Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch. It has become a trend thus far although this is not expected to go beyond that. The Filipino boxing icon wants a second fight but Mayweather has shown little to no interest of facing Pacquiao in a rematch. Both exchanged barbs on social media although all this is likely to die down soon.
Assuming that for some reason that a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather II happens, critics are divided on who will come out on top. Some feel that Mayweather will outbox Pacquiao once again while others feel that the 40-year-old boxer-senator can even the odds if he goats the undefeated American boxer into exchanging blows with him. One guy who believes the Pac-Man has the edge if ever the rematch happens is Andy Ruiz Jr. The 29-year-old heavyweight champion was one of many boxing personalities in attendance during the Pacquiao vs. Thurman bout.
Ruiz is best known for pulling off that upset against Anthony Joshua last month. He became the first Mexican to become world heavyweight champion after prying away the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles from Joshua via 7th round TKO at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
"I think Manny because he's been more active," said Ruiz in an interview with TMZ Sports.
However, Ruiz is not entirely siding with the Filipino boxing icon. He is not counting out Mayweather and said that the 42-year-old keeps himself in shape and pretty good. Either way, he feels that it would be awesome to see the two future boxing Hall of Famers back in action once more.
"Mayweather is Mayweather. He's always good. He stays in shape, takes care of himself ... but it would be an awesome fight," he added.
Ironically, Ruiz is working on a rematch himself with Joshua. The 29-year-old was previously undefeated before the Mexican defied the odds and hacked out that surprise 7th round TKO. Aside from that, he is reportedly ready to get a movie done about his life. He is calling himself the "Mexican Rocky" which seems to be fitting following that big upset on Joshua back in June.
As of this writing, promoter Eddie Hearn said that it will be Joshua who will decide where the rematch will take place, Boxingscene.com reported. With the rematch clause of the first fight exercised, it will be interesting if the Mexican pug can replicate that win and prove to the boxing world that his win was no fluke.
