Fishermen In Ohio Fishing Tournament Scandal Charged With Cheating, Attempted Grand Theft
The two professional fishermen caught cheating at an Ohio tournament were charged Wednesday on three felony counts and a misdemeanor.
Jacob Runyan, 42, and Chase Cominsky, 35, were charged in Cuyahogo County on counts of cheating, attempted grand theft, possessing criminal tools and unlawful ownership of wild animals. Competition officials discovered that the fish Runyan and Cominsky had caught had weights inside them.
"I take all crime very seriously, and I believe what these two individuals attempted to do was not only dishonorable but also criminal," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley said in a press release.
The felony charges are punishable by up to 12 months in prison with $2,500 in fines, while the misdemeanor is punishable by up to 30 days in jail with $250 in fines.
Runyan and Cominksy were caught cheating at The Lake Erie Walleye Trail tournament on Sept. 30. The winning prize was $28,760.
Their fish weighed in at about 7 pounds. The fish were opened upon suspicion that they were too heavy.
The event was caught on video and the story has generated national headlines.
