In this time and age, when consuming alcohol has become a norm for adults at any social gathering, turning away a glass is a little difficult. People who don't like alcohol take a sip or two to avoid being branded a "teetotaler."

While it's completely all right to down a few drinks when you are out and about, it makes no sense to always be dependent on alcohol.

We aren't strangers to the fact that alcohol plagues our health in every way possible, after all. Not being able to moderate one's alcohol intake and extensive daytime drinking habits can cost a man his relationships, as well as lead to a disastrous death.

There is a thin line between complete abstinence and being a drunkard. The person who successfully strikes a balance between these two extremes is more likely to avoid health issues.

That said, not being able to limit drinking especially at a young age doesn't necessarily make someone an alcoholic. However, this person does need to check for some signs that the body is asking to rein things in.

Here are five signs you should reassess your alcohol consumption:

1. Alcohol is your refuge to escape certain emotions

Whenever you feel strong emotions such as anger, sadness and stress, you reach for a shot of alcohol to calm down your nerves. While this habit can bring you momentary comfort, there are possibilities of dangerous consequences.

2. You feel less productive at work

Alcohol slows you down physically as well as takes a toll on your mental health. "Brain fog" stems from overdrinking, which makes the body sluggish, ripping one of his energy to work.

3. You are always craving a drink

If you keep on thinking a lot about alcohol and look forward to drinking all the time, it's high time you visited a therapist to assist you in curbing your alcohol addiction.

4. You are having more conflicts with your loved ones

Alcohol causes stress and disturbs your mental balance. Many drinking stints end in disaster, causing serious domestic altercations. If you too are having frequent arguments with your loved ones, maybe it's time to quit alcohol, however hard that may seem.

5. You down more glasses than others at a party

If you find yourself outpacing others at parties while drinking and waking up with a sickly feeling the next morning, it may be a sign to tone down your alcohol intake.
