‘The Flash’ EP Reveals How They Got Danny Trejo To Play Breacher
“The Flash” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg opened up about how they managed to get Danny Trejo for the role of Breacher in Season 4 of the CW series.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kreisberg revealed that they initially thought there’s no way Trejo would do the part. “We were in the [writers’] room and we were like, ‘Who could we get [to play Breacher]?’ and someone said Danny Trejo,” the executive producer recalled. “We all started laughing like, ‘He’d be great, but of course Danny Trejo’s not going to do this.’ But as I’ve discovered over these past few years, if you don’t ask, you don’t get it. So we reached out to him and his people, and it turned out he was a fan, and he was eager to do it, and he loved the character.”
While it’s unclear what episode Trejo will appear in, the “Machete” actor was spotted last August in downtown Vancouver where the show’s cast and crew were filming scenes for Season 4, episode 4.
“We just thought it would be a great episode,” Kreisberg said of the Trejo’s debut installment. “Gypsy and [her portrayer] Jessica [Camacho], they’re so tough and so strong. We’re like, ‘Obviously she came from somebody strong,’ and we just thought it would be a hilarious idea for Cisco (Carlos Valdes), who’s managed to melt Gypsy’s heart, being unable to do the same with her father.”
“I feel like we wrote [Trejo’s Breacher] a great script,” Kreisberg added. “His character and his storyline with Cisco and Gypsy, it’s part of this slight redirection of the series this year — it’s just doing much more fun stories and much more just out and out hilarious things to match Barry’s newfound optimism and lightness.”
News of Trejo’s casting was announced during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel last July. Described as a feared bounty hunter from Earth-19, Breacher is tasked to prevent any inter-dimensional traveler from threatening life on his planet — especially his daughter’s. Given Cisco’s romance with Gypsy, Breacher is expected to clash in some way with the S.T.A.R. Lab’s resident mechanical engineer.
“The Flash” Season 4 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
