KEY POINTS

  • Adobe has ended support for Flash
  • It will start blocking any Flash content from running starting Jan. 12
  • Users are advised to remove it from their devices

Adobe first revealed its plans to drop support for Flash in 2017. Now, the company has already ended support for Flash, and in a few more days, the Flash browser plug-in and Flash Player will no longer work.

Adobe actually provided support for Flash after the 2017 announcement up until last year. The company, through the updates, set the feature’s end-of-life (EOL) date to Dec. 31, 2020. It officially ended support for Flash on New Year's Day and will start blocking any Flash content from running starting on Jan. 12.

The lack of support will mean Flash can pose a security risk for all users. And since Adobe no longer plans to release any form of support for it, users cannot and should not expect it to remain secure in the future. That said, all users are advised to stop using Flash and remove it from their systems.

Adobe itself knew that Flash could be a security risk and advised users to uninstall the Flash Player. It has also removed download pages for it from websites.

Those who still have the Flash Player installed on their Macs can remove or uninstall it by doing the following:

First, users will need to download the correct uninstaller for their Mac’s operating system version. Uninstallers for Mac OS X 10.1 to 10.3, OS X 10.4 and 10.5, and OS X 10.6 and newer, including macOS, can be downloaded.

From here, the procedure varies depending on the operating system version.

For OS X 10.1 to 10.3

  • First, users should open the uninstaller, then authenticate if needed.
  • Second, users should click on Continue. The uninstaller will remove Flash Player and close once it has finished.
  • Lastly, users should verify the process by opening this link using any browser.

For Mac OS X 10.4 and newer, including macOS

  • First, users should open the uninstaller and click Uninstall.
  • Second, users should close any open browser either manually or via the uninstaller dialog box.
  • Third, users should wait for the uninstaller to finish removing Flash, then click Done.
  • Fourth, users should open Finder, then locate and delete the directory /Library/Preferences/Macromedia/FlashPlayer.
  • Fifth, after this, users should also locate and delete the directory /Library/Caches/Adobe/FlashPlayer.
  • Lastly, users should verify the process by opening this link using any browser.
