Grant Gustin as The Flash
The San Diego Comic-Con synopsis for Season 4 of “The Flash” reveals that it’s up to Team Flash to free Barry (Grant Gustin) from the Speed Force. The CW

Although Barry (Grant Gustin) voluntarily locked himself up in the Speed Force at the end of Season 3 finale of “The Flash,” the team he left behind won’t let him spend the rest of his life as a prisoner.

According to the San Diego Comic-Con synopsis for Season 4 of the CW series, members of Team Flash will do everything they can to get Barry out of the Speed Force after mysterious threats start to appear in Central City. Read the complete synopsis below:

“Running up against an evil time remnant version of yourself is something no one should ever have to do, but that’s exactly what faced Barry Allen (aka The Flash) as he fought to save the life of fiancée Iris West (Candice Patton) from the God of Speed known as Savitar. Barry’s victory was short-lived, however, as an unbalanced Speed Force began to wreak havoc on Central City, forcing Barry to sacrifice himself for the greater good. With The Fastest Man Alive now trapped inside an extra-dimensional energy, and unknown dangers lurking in the shadows, it will be up to Team Flash to free Barry from his own personal hell.”

Patton revealed to TVLine earlier this week that Barry remains stuck in the Speed Force in the Season 4 premiere, which opens six months after the events in the Season 3 finale. “We still don’t have Barry out of the Speed Force [in Season 4, episode 1],” Patton said. “Iris is really struggling to deal with that, and she does it in her own way.”

In a separate interview with With An Accent TV, Patton said that Iris is going to play a more integral role in Team Flash as they figure out a way to free Barry from the Speed Force. “We do get to see a different version of Iris,” Patton told the news outlet when asked what fans can expect from her character when the show returns this fall. “She’s a little harder. She’s without the love of her life. [And] she’s kind of had to step into this role as the leader of the Flash team.”

More details about Season 4 are expected to be revealed at the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, which is scheduled on Saturday, July 22. Members of the panel include cast members Gustin, Patton, Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), Tom Cavanagh (Harrison Wells), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/Vibe) and Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West/Kid Flash).

“The Flash” Season 4 will premiere on Tuesday, Oct 10 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
