Candice Patton as Iris, Grant Gustin as The Flash
“The Flash” stars Candice Patton and Grant Gustin teased how bleak 2024 is in Season 3, episode 19. The CW

In an attempt to find out Savitar’s real identity, Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to 2024 in next week’s Season 3, episode 19 of “The Flash.” While the Scarlet Speedster successfully landed in the right year, the future he finds himself in appears to be a lot more terrible than what he expected.

“It’s a future where Iris has been killed, and everyone is changed because of it,” Candice Patton, who plays Iris on the CW series, said of 2024 in a recent interview with TVLine. “You see this older version of Barry Allen that hasn’t really ever gotten over the death of Iris West.”

“He’s in shambles,” Gustin added of 2024 Barry.

Although Barry’s primary objective in his trip to the future is to determine who Savitar is, the synopsis for the episode reveals that Barry finds himself infusing a sense of hope back into the older version of Team Flash members who were deeply affected by their terrifying showdown with Savitar.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, Gustin said that Barry’s journey to 2024 is unlike any time travel he has done before. “This is definitely his most involved trip to the future or the past because he’s there for a predominant part of the episode and tries to get some clues as to how [Iris’ murder at the hands of Savitar] went down in the future so he can come back and stop it,” Gustin said.

Interestingly, the episode doesn’t solely take place in the future. As revealed in the synopsis, Team Flash, back in 2017, starts hunting for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker), who completely took over Caitlin at the end of last episode.

“The Flash” Season 3, episode 19, titled “The Once and Future Flash,” airs on Tuesday, April 25 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
