‘The Flash’ Spoilers: EP Says Future Barry’s Message To Rip Hunter Connects To Savitar
“The Flash” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed that the message Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) got from Barry (Grant Gustin) from the year 2056 ties into the reveal that Savitar is a version of Barry from the future.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kreisberg said that the connection between the two will be addressed very soon. “Someone does point out that suddenly that message makes a lot of sense,” the exec producer said.
The opening of the message was first heard by Stein (Victor Garber) and Jax (Franz Drameh) in Season 2, episode 3 of “Legends of Tomorrow.” While repairing the Waverider, the duo found out that Rip has a secret compartment inside the time ship. With the help of Gideon (voiced by Amy Pemberton), Stein and Jax were able to locate the secret compartment and decided to get inside. Much to their surprise, the secret compartment is actually an armory. But apart from the stashes of weapons they found inside, it was also where the two discovered Barry’s voicemail from 2056.

“Sorry to contact you like this Captain Hunter but I can’t risk putting in more lives in danger, which is why you’ll keep what I’m about to tell you, a secret, even with the rest of your team,” future Barry says at the beginning of his audio message.
The rest of the message was then heard by Barry himself in Season 3, episode 8 of “The Flash” right before Team Flash, Team Arrow, the Legends and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) faced off against the alien race Dominators.
“A war is coming Captain Hunter and at some point you’re gonna be called back to Central City to fight it,” 2056 Barry says in his message to Rip. “So you need to know that, while you and your team have been in the temporal zone, I made a choice that affected the timeline. As you know, whenever you alter the past, those changes affect the present and get compounded in the future. When you return, you will be in the new timeline I created, where everyone’s past and everyone’s future has been affected, including yours. When you come back don’t trust anything or anyone. Not even me.”
In Season 3, episode 19 of “The Flash,” Barry traveled to the future and met the 2024 version of himself. It’s unclear, however, whether viewers are also going to get a glimpse of 2056 Barry in an upcoming episode. But because Kreisberg was impressed by Gustin’s portrayal of 2024 Barry, it won’t be surprising if Gustin ends up playing another version of Barry in the future.
“What’s so amazing about these last few episodes, especially when you think about it in terms of [episode 19] ‘Once and Future Flash,’ is Grant made the future Flash a very distinct character,” the exec producer told Entertainment Weekly. “He does the same with Savitar, especially in scenes where he has to act with himself. If everything Grant has done up until now, including the musical, hasn’t blown you away with his talent, I think when you see scenes of him and Savitar together, you’re really going to be blown away because he’s found a whole new speed for him.”
An all-new episode of “The Flash” (Season 3, episode 21) airs on Tuesday, May 9 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
