Fleet Week: Marine killed while crossing street
A 22-year-old Marine who had come to New York for Fleet Week died early Thursday after he was struck by a car while crossing the West Side Highway, the New York Times reported.
The Marine, whom the police have yet to identify, was returning to his ship, the USS Iwo Jima, around 1 a.m., the police said.
According to police, he and several other Marines stepped out of a cab near 49th Street and the West Side Highway, near where the ship is docked by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. He crossed the street and headed toward Pier 88, and was hit by a 2003 Acura.
The driver of the Acura, a 39-year-old man, pulled over, called police and walked to the scene. The other Marines were uninjured. And the authorities do not suspect any criminal behavior was involved.
The name was withheld pending family notification.
