In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old Florida mother was accidentally shot dead by her toddler while the woman was attending a work-related zoom call.

Police said Thursday that they were called to the Oaks of Spring Valley apartments off Wymore Road around 11 am Wednesday by a caller who was attending a Zoom meeting with 21-year-old Shamaya Lynn, NBC News reported.

The caller told police that during the Zoom meeting, they saw a toddler in the background and heard a noise, just before Lynn fell backwards. She never returned to the call, a statement by Altamonte Springs Police Department said.

Paramedics, who rushed to the scene, found Lynn with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Though they did their best in rendering aid to Lynn, she succumbed to her injuries, the statement added.

It further said that "investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment."

Lynn’s other toddler was also home at the time of the incident. Both the children, including the one who fired the gun, were unharmed and handed over to a relative of the family. According to investigators, the handgun belonged to the father of the victim's children.

An investigation has begun in this regard as detectives work with the Seminole County State Attorney's Office to decide about filing charges against the dad.

Meanwhile, the Altamonte Springs police have urged gun owners to lock their firearms, and if they don't have safe storage, the department can provide one for free, WESH reported.

"To anyone and everyone tuning into this story if you don't have a firearm please keep it locked and secured this incident could be avoided,” Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. told the news outlet.

A similar incident was reported last week when a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot his father inside their home in Gastonia, North Carolina. The child found the gun lying on a table and began playing with it. The father was sitting on the couch when his son pulled the trigger, the boy's grandmother told police.

The toddler and his parents were reportedly visiting the boy's grandmother when the shooting took place.
