A Florida highway trooper was captured in a dashcam video saving a 1-year-old child from choking on the side of Interstate 95.
The Florida Highway Patrol’s office released the footage from the Oct. 16 incident on Twitter and called Trooper Reginald Mathieu a "hero." The incident occurred near the I-95 entrance ramp in Miami.
"Trooper Mathieu's first aid training immediately kicked in as he jumped into action, performing a series of back blows until the toddler regained consciousness," FHP Miami said on Twitter.
Trooper Mathieu was heading to a crash scene in the area of Southwest Seventh Street when the toddler’s parents flagged him down, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The trooper leaps into action immediately. The dashcam video showed the trooper running toward the child to help.
Two other cars had stopped along the ramp and a couple of good Samaritans could be seen trying to get the child to breathe again while Mathieu made his way toward them.
A good Samaritan who stopped to help used an anti-choking device on the child, which helped the child breathe.
The child's mother said that her child was crying when trooper Mathieu reached them. Mathieu began performing back blows on the child until she regained complete consciousness, the agency said.
It is unclear what the girl had choked on, or how long she had been unresponsive.
The toddler’s mother later told Miami Herald that the anti-choking device, "LifeVac" helped dislodge the unknown item from the child’s throat.
"We are very grateful for the trooper, but we really want to spread awareness about LifeVac and how important it is for people to have," the mother, who did not want to be named to protect the identity of her family, said to the outlet.
The child was later taken to a hospital as a precaution.
In July, two officers were hailed heroes after they rescued a mother and her 8-month-old baby who were trapped underneath a car. The woman was pushing a stroller when a drunk driver rammed into her and then to the side of a building. The cops, who were nearby, witnessed the scene and rushed to help free them from the crashed car.
