Florida Woman Baffled To Find 2 Alligators Fighting Outside Front Door, Incident Caught On Camera
A homeowner in Fort Myers, Florida, was left baffled after she found two alligators fighting outside her front door.
Around 7 a.m. on May 26, Susan Geshel was getting coffee when she heard a pounding on the door. To her surprise, she found two alligators fighting outside her home.
A video of the incident shared of social media by the homeowner showed one of the gators clamping its jaws on the other’s body before pinning the reptile on the wall.
Speaking to Fort Myers News-Press, Geshel said the gators were on the property for about 20 minutes. The two reptiles then left and one of them crossed the street to a neighbor's house. Geshel told the newspaper that though she didn’t see the other alligator, she believes it must have gone to a nearby pond.
“They made a mess on the front door,” she said. The gators were around seven feet in length.
Speaking about the incident, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Melody Kilborn said the two adult male gators were “exhibiting a typical reaction to being in a somewhat confined space.”
"Alligators are most active and visible when the weather is warm, and in some places in Florida, that can occur year-round," Kilborn said. She also warned people that alligators could be in any water body regardless of the weather.
In another incident in Florida last week, an alligator farm employee was bitten by a gator. Jim Darlington, an employee at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, was in a canoe when he was bitten by a 12-foot-long alligator in the farm's swamp area. The gator grabbed the man and pulled him into the water before biting him. Darlington managed to break free. He was rushed to a local hospital by the paramedics, however, his condition remained unknown.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the spokesperson for the farm, said, “His years of experience with crocodilians helped him to get out of the situation as safely as possible. Jim is doing well and receiving treatment at Flagler Hospital. We invite you all to join us in wishing Jim the best and quickest recovery."
