By some stroke of luck, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has found another gem in boxing and immediately adopted him in his team.
Mayweather did not waste his time as he signed Jean Carlos Torres, an undefeated junior welterweight prospect who has impressed during his training sessions in Las Vegas.
Mayweather was prompted to bring in Torres after several weeks of having a first-hand sight of the latter's blue-collar work that was highlighted by an impressive sparring session with WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis.
“We are very excited to welcome Jean Torres to our Mayweather Promotions family,” Mayweather Promotions President Leonard Ellerbe said, per the Boxing Scene.
“Floyd (Mayweather) had a personal interest in Torres because he saw him work daily for three weeks and was impressed with what he was doing and decided to sign him because he is a fighter who works very hard and we as a promoter hope to continue the tradition of producing greats, world champions from Puerto Rico.”
According to reports, Torres was led by his manager to bring the grind and join Mayweather's team for a series of workouts in the U.S. after the gyms in Puerto Rico were forced to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I went to Las Vegas to work hard without thinking that this was going to happen. I am in a position where at any moment we are called to fight for a world title and you cannot lower the intensity and train half a pot during the pandemic," Torres said.
"Signing with Mayweather is a dream come true and I won't let you down. What started as temporary training ended up being a big step for my career. With God's favor we will give much glory to Mayweather Promotions, Trujillo Alto, La Gloria neighborhood and Puerto Rico."
At 30 years of age, Torres is still upbeat of his chances to make it big in the sport. A proven knockout artist, the Puerto Rican boasts 14 victories via a stoppage as he stays unblemished in 18 professional fights.
