'Floyd Mayweather Of MMA' Explains How He Would Beat Khabib, 'Money'
KEY POINTS
- AJ McKee wants a super-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
- McKee is confident he can beat Mayweather and former UFC champ Khabib Nurmagomedov
- The 26-year-old has earned comparisons to "Money"
A mixed martial arts champion is certain about solving the Floyd Mayweather and Khabib Nurmagomedov puzzles.
AJ McKee has been undefeated as a pro and is now the current Bellator featherweight champion.
However, the 26-year-old is still looking to add more glitter in his soaring career and has been throwing his name into a potential fight against his fellow unbeaten combat sports athletes such as Nurmagomedov and Mayweather.
In a rare interview with Elie Seckback of EsNews, McKee--who has been training under the tutelage of his father Antonio McKee in California--was quizzed to comment on how a showdown against Nurmagomedov would play out.
According to McKee, the former UFC lightweight champ’s style resembles that of his father’s, and the fact that he was “taught how to beat” that, the outcome is quite obvious.
“Me versus Khabib? The thing is, the thing about that fight is my father, has a similar style to Khabib,” McKee explained. “And my father’s style, he taught how to beat my father.”
However, McKee also suggested that neither he nor Nurmagomedov would want to engage into a “bloody” fight at this point.
“It would be a very bloody [fight] and I don’t think I would wanna go through, and I don’t think he [Nurmagomedov] would wanna go through,” he stated.
McKee’s savvy and tactical style of fighting has earned him the moniker “Mayweather of MMA.”
Amid the said comparisons, “Mercenary” has developed a certain thirst to share the ring with “Money” himself.
When quizzed about how a dream fight against Mayweather would go down, McKee insisted that he has a lot of “respect” for the American and will not opt to “dismantle” him.
“He’s a great athlete,” McKee said of Mayweather. “To be my dad’s age and to be able to perform at his age, man that’s phenomenal.”
“(Mayweather) He needs to fight people that respect him not just makin’ it the ‘money fights’,” he continued. “I respect him as an athlete, I’m not gonna go there and try to knock his head off, I respect him and I just wanna shar that moment with him and just greatness and being able to compare myself to him, and test my skills, I’m not gonna go out there and dismantle the man.”
McKee is coming off a sensational win over Patricio "Pitbull" Freire to take the featherweight title and land a $1 million prize at Bellator 263 earlier this month.
Meanwhile, both Nurmagomedov and Mayweather are officially retired, making a super-fight against McKee unlikely at the moment.
But push comes to shove, Bellator CEO Scott Coker will be open to the idea.
"I would love to see him [McKee] fight against other people [outside Bellator], as well," Coker said after Bellator 263. "As you guys would also. It's not going to happen because it's not the UFC's business model. You're telling me this kid couldn't go in there and fight anybody right now? We all know he could do it."
