A disgusted Floyd Mayweather went off at Conor McGregor following the UFC superstar’s shocking retirement from the fighting scene. As he called out the Notorious for not manning up to his word of beating him in a second fight, the retired American boxing icon is now returning the summons, saying he’ll “punish” the Irish man should he wish to return.

The 43-year-old Mayweather did not mince his words as he went to Instagram and lambasted McGregor’s decision to call it quits.

“If I’m not mistaken, didn’t you tell Mike Tyson you could beat me if we fought a second time? Now you’re quitting! I thought you wanted to beat the best? Well, if you decide to come back, I will be waiting to punish you again,” Mayweather wrote commenting to the MMA star’s cake photo which displayed words saying, “Happy Retirement Day.”

McGregor dropped the bomb on Sunday morning as he wrote: “Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my World title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.”

No one saw the decision coming, especially with McGregor being once vocal about facing Mayweather again for a rematch, in which he was certain he’d come out with the victory.

Asked about the reason behind the sudden decision to hang it up, McGregor told ESPN that “he has lost his excitement for the sport.”

"The game just does not excite me, and that's that," McGregor rued. "All this waiting around. There's nothing happening. I'm going through opponent options, and there's nothing really there at the minute. There's nothing that's exciting me.”

Meanwhile, fans are left puzzled by Mayweather’s response, with some questioning the implied come back is just a mere publicity stunt, or a ploy to draw more interest for the sake of a huge payday yet again.

Notably, Mayweather has said in previous interviews that he has no intention to come out from retirement. A five-division world champion with an unblemished record in 50 fights, Mayweather has not fought since he defeated McGregor via a 10th round stoppage in 2017.
