Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor: Boxer Is Ready For Fight In 2017, Blames UFC Star For Holdup
Floyd Mayweather wants a fight with Conor McGregor. After being taunted by the UFC star for well over a year, the boxer is ready to step inside the ring with the biggest name in MMA.
Mayweather said in January that he offered McGregor $15 million guaranteed, as well as a portion of the pay-per-view revenue, to face him in a boxing match. With no deal in place two months later, Mayweather is growing impatient.
“The Conor McGregor fight, I don’t know if it’s going to happen. If it do, it do. If it don’t, it don’t. They ask me about this fight always. They’re always asking me about the fight,” Mayweather told ESPN while visiting the United Kingdom for his Undefeated Tour.
“If Conor McGregor really wants the fight to happen, stop blowing smoke up everybody’s ass. Sign the paper. Sign the paper. You said you’re a boss, just sign the paper and let’s make it happen.”
Mayweather’s $15 million offer was a counter offer to McGregor’s demand for a $100 million payday. The UFC lightweight champion has said he’ll make the transition to boxing for a fight with Mayweather, but he wants to make nine figures for doing so.
The two fighters have done a lot of jawing through the media, with McGregor doing much of the trash talking. He’s contended that he could defeat Mayweather and knock out the undefeated boxer’s most recent opponents.
While the reality is that McGregor would likely have no chance to beat Mayweather or any other top boxer, a McGregor-Mayweather fight would generate hundreds of millions of dollars. McGregor’s rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202 on Aug. 20 reportedly sold close to two million PPVs, and a super-fight against Mayweather could dwarf that number. Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao set the all-time record on May 2, 2015 with 4.6 million buys.
Mayweather hasn't stepped inside the ring since he retired in September 2015 following a win over Andre Berto, but he’s said a fight against McGregor would make his return worthwhile. The boxer is 49-0 in his career.
McGregor last fought on Nov. 12 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight championship, becoming the first fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously. Because of the impending birth of his child, McGregor isn’t expected to fight again until September.
