Josie Harris, the former girlfriend of boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather, was found dead in her car Tuesday. She was in the middle of a $20 million defamation lawsuit that she filed against the superstar boxer on 2015.
Officers responded to a home in Valencia, California, at around 12:30 p.m. EST and they found Harris, 40, unresponsive in the car on the driveway, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
An official confirmation with regard to the cause of the death was yet to be released. Authorities said they weren’t probing the matter as homicide as it didn’t appear to be a case of a foul play.
Their relationship spanned from 1995 to 2010. Mayweather, who fathered three children with Harris, was convicted of domestic abuse in 2010 for which he served 2 months’ prison term in 2012. Harris said Mayweather physically abused her several times earlier. In the 2010 incident, Mayweather was said to have entered her home, pulled her hair, and attacked her in her sleep while her children looked on. Mayweather pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor domestic battery charges he was facing in 2012. The prosecutors later dropped the charges against him which could have otherwise lead to 34 years of jail term.
Harris filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit against Mayweather in 2015 after the latter labeled her a drug addict publicly in an interview and the case is still going on, NBC News reported.
