Football Rumors: David Beckham Plans Swoop For Manchester United Outcast, Chelsea Striker
KEY POINTS
- David Beckham wants reinforcements for Inter Miami
- Beckham could bring Manchester United's Sergio Romero and Chelsea's Olivier Giroud to MLS
- Romero's wife wants him out of Manchester United
David Beckham could be in hot pursuit of English Premier League veterans to bolster his Inter Miami squad this season.
After losing 13 of 23 matches this season in the Major League Soccer (MLS), Inter Miami now has its sights on Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
Beckham, a part-owner of the club, is said to have been considering a transfer swoop for the Red Devils veteran in January to end his lack of pitch time with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, The Athletic reported.
Romero has been linked with a number of clubs in the past but could be tempted to finally leave Old Trafford for Inter Miami. His contract is set to expire in June 2021 with an option to extend it for another year.
However, Manchester United is believed to be keen on cashing in on the 33-year-old instead on the next transfer window.
Despite the apparent interest from Inter Miami, the same report also noted that salary caps in the U.S. could cause a bit of a problem for Romero’s potential move to MLS.
The Argentine’s current salary is around the region of £100,000-per-week ($134,000), an amount Beckham’s side might not be able to match at the moment.
Should a move to MLS doesn’t come to fruition, the report added that Romero could find himself staying in Europe with an “unnamed Spanish club” also interested in signing the World Cup runner-up on loan for the rest of the season.
Romero is rumored to be entertaining the idea of leaving Manchester United after consistently becoming a third choice behind David de Gea and Dean Henderson.
In fact, he was left out of the club’s English Premier League and UEFA Champions League squads this season.
The goalkeeper was also sidelined in all three of Manchester United’s semi-final defeats last season–Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup--something Romero’s wife, Eliana Guercio, ranted about on social media.
“Sergio Romero worked hard for his club,” Guercio wrote on Instagram. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him [the Europa League in 2017]. He helped the team reach four finals/semi-finals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all. It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go.”
Aside from Romero, Beckham's MLS franchise is also linked to move for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, Eurosport reported.
Like Romero, Giroud reportedly demands more playing time from Chelsea coach Frank Lampard.
Inter Miami, on the other hand, has been looking for reinforcements and Giroud is one of the players topping its recruitment list.
In fact, Beckham has reportedly made an offer of £4m ($5.3 million) for the Blues striker earlier this month.
