KEY POINTS

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is contracted to play for Juventus until the 2022 season
  • Ronaldo's mother will convince him to return to Sporting Club in Lisbon
  • Sporting Club just won its first Primeira Liga title in 19 years

The end of Cristiano Ronaldo's time with Juventus might come sooner—at least according to his mother.

The superstar's mother Dolores Aveiro insisted on convincing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to head back home and join Sporting Club, where he started his famed football career.

“I’ll talk to him to bring him back,” she said. "Next year he will play in Alvalade (Sporting’s stadium).”

Aveiro lives in Lisbon and was asked by supporters following Sporting CP's Primeira Liga championship.

Lisbon had just ended a 19-year title drought in the Portuguese league with 82 points and two matches to spare.

Ronaldo, who recently just scored his 100th goal for Juventus, is in contract with the Italian giants until 2022.

The 36-year-old forward is also linked to a possible return to Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, although manager Zinedine Zidane has already addressed the faint rumors in March.

"He's a Juve player and I have to respect these things," Zidane said.

Before embarking on memorable runs at Old Trafford and the Bernabeu, a young Ronaldo played for Sporting in 2002 in both the youth and B-team level.

He then established himself as one of the greatest footballers ever, winning trophies at every level and elevating his clubs to unparalleled heights.

He led Manchester United to three English Premier League crowns, as well as both the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Champions League trophies in 2008.

Ronaldo then steered Real Madrid to four UEFA Champions League titles, including three consecutive from 2016 to 2018 and three Club World Cups, on top of two La Liga titles.

In his stint with Juve, Ronaldo led the side to a Scudetto twice. Unfortunately, they only finished fifth in the 2020-21 Serie A, behind new champions Internazionale, Atalanta, AC Milan and Napoli.

A return in Portugal would mean absolute momentum for the Lisbon side next season and a full circle for Ronaldo's career.

But until Ronaldo's mother does some serious talk to his son, only the all-time great will be able to decide where to play next.
