Ford Recall: More Than 200,000 Ford Explorers Have Issues With Rolling Away While In Park
American automaker Ford is recalling certain Explorers over issues involving rolling away unexpectedly while the vehicle is in park.
“A disconnected driveshaft can result in vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is placed in 'Park' without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of a crash,” National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported on April 14.
“The rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect,” the agency added.
The recall will affect 252,936 vehicles including models from the Explorer Hybrid 2020-2022, Explorer Intercept Hybrid 2020-2022, Explorer PHEV 2020-2022, and Explorer Police Intercept 2020-2021, according to the report.
Owners of these vehicles can have a repair done for free at a dealer. The bushing and axle cover will be replaced or an update to the electronic parking brake software will be done.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed out on June 6, 2022.
Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S27.
