Ford’s 2024 Mustang Is On The Horizon: What Is Known About The Muscle Car?

Ford (F) is gearing up to take the wraps off its next-generation Mustang.

The new muscle car, which is expected to have the model designation S650, will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in September, with production slated for the first half of 2023, sources told Automotive News. The show will be held Sept. 14-25 after being canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.

Details from the news outlet’s report said that Ford’s new 2024 Mustang would continue to be powered by 5.0 L Coyote V8 engines and four-cylinder, turbocharged EcoBoost powertrains -– a carryover from the current model. It was unclear from the report what drivetrain would be equipped on the vehicle.

A Ford spokesperson did not confirm the release of the muscle car to Automotive News, only saying that the new Mustang was “on its way.” Another spokesperson for the automaker also told Jalopnik that the new seventh-generation Mustang was on its way, adding, “we can’t wait to share more details soon.”

With the release of the all-new Mustang, the car will be considered the only non-pickup, non-SUV in Ford’s vehicle lineup, Jalopnik reported. Recent sales of the car in 2021 have lagged, with just over 52,000 units sold, down 18% from 2020, according to Automotive News.

However, it is the best-selling muscle car for the first half of 2022, overtaking the Dodge Challenger, according to Fox News. The news outlet also reported that a hybrid option on the 2024 Mustang is also expected.

The Ford Mustang will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2024. The car will be built at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.
