Arsenal FC has several targets in mind, one of which is Thomas Partey. However, the Gunners have yet to find a way to get something done. Atletico Madrid is bent on keeping Partey in the mix but the Gunners remain persistent.
One alternative that Arsenal is trying is to add a player to lower the $60 million release clause that Atletico wants. The Gunners tried to dangle Matteo Guendouzi plus cash but Los Indios thumbed it down. Rather than the French player, Atletico is more interested in another player in Alexandre Lacazette.
The only problem with that preference is that Mikel Arteta is not too keen on dealing with the 29-year-old player away. So far, no other name has been mentioned with Los Indios seemingly only wanting Lacazette and no one else.
With their pursuit of Partey not gaining any steam, a former Arsenal striker, Kevin Campbell, believes that the Gunners should reconsider giving up Lacazette for Partey. He has kept tabs with the Ghanaian player and believes he is worth the gamble when he spoke to Gentingbet.
“A player like Thomas Partey stops things getting to the back four – he is that screen that sits there, like [Patrick] Vieira and Gilberto were – someone who protects the back four so they don’t even need to break a sweat," he said.
For Campbell, Arsenal will have to figure out how to raise the funds that Atletico is seeking. If Arteta cannot figure out which player to send to Los Indios, an alternative would be to sell players not included in the club's plans.
“I believe that getting Thomas Partey is the priority and I think that they will get the business done in the end but I'm sure they have to get a couple of bodies out of the club before they bring him in,” Campbell said.
Arteta could deal out players but the easiest way seen is to part with Lacazette and include him in a deal for Partey. There is no update yet on whether he has changed his stance. Arsenal could forget getting Partey for now who is under contract until 2023. Lacazette is the key to making it happen and there is no word if Arteta will change his mind.
