KEY POINTS

  • Anthony Martial has not scored for Man Utd in 14 matches
  • He has made six appearances so far this term
  • He is linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January

Former England forward Dion Dublin has slammed Anthony Martial, saying the French man "doesn’t do anything" and is "horrible to watch" after the Red Devils’ League Cup exit on Wednesday.

Martial has not found the back of the net since recording a brace in Manchester United’s 9-0 win over Southampton in February. He then missed the end of the last season with a knee ligament issue. However, for the third-round game in the League Cup, against West Ham, Martial received a rare start but once again former Monaco forward failed to deliver.

"We need to see more from Anthony Martial, we have said it many times before but he is not helping his cause. I want to see him sweating and putting the ball in the back of the net. He has not done enough since being at United, you see flashes and think it is the start then he doesn’t do anything," Dublin, who played for Manchester United between 1992 and 1994, was quoted by soccer website TEAMtalk as saying in an interview on BBC.

On Wednesday, Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss to West Ham in the third round, courtesy of a ninth-minute strike from Hammers' forward Manuel Lanzini. Martial, who has not scored in as many as 14 matches, once again is on the receiving end of massive criticism.

"His body language is horrible to watch, he doesn’t want to run around and work hard to be Manchester United’s No 9. There were too many parts in the game where Manchester United did not do enough, the final third was poor," added former England soccer player Dublin in the same interview.

Martial moved from Monaco to Old Trafford at $49 million in the summer of 2015. However, his goals tally of just 78 from 264 competitive appearances is disappointing.

The 2019-20 season was Martial’s best in the red shirt as he scored 23 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games, across all competitions. However, in the 2020-21 season, he managed to score just seven goals and nine assists in 36 competitive matches.

With the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and the quick rise of Mason Greenwood, Martial’s struggles at Old Trafford have further increased. It was earlier reported that Manchester United have given a green signal to Martial’s representatives to look for another club for their client. The Red Devils are valuing Martial at $55 million and they would part ways with the 25-year-old forward if they receive a fair deal in January. It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur and FC Barcelona are monitoring Martial’s contract situation at Manchester United.
