A former two-time Maine gubernatorial candidate was arrested Friday on charges of possession of child pornography

Eliot Cutler, 75, was arrested at his home in Brooklin and was bailed out Saturday on a $50,000 bail, according to officials with the Hancock County Jail. He currently faces four counts of possession of sexually explicit material of a child under 12.

Hancock County District Attorney Matthew Foster has said that detectives identified 10 files of sexually exploitative material depicting children that police had seen before in other cases, according to The Portland Press Herald.

Cutler’s materials are still being reviewed by The Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit and said that it “wouldn't surprise me if more charges were on the way.”

The investigation began with a tip to Maine State Police from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that someone from Maine had either downloaded or uploaded a single illegal image.

Authorities said that Cutler committed from December through March.

It is unclear when Cutler will appear in court but each count of possession of child pornography carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Cutler ran for governor in 2010 and 2014. He has been involved with politics for decades.
