- He joined Man Utd during the 2020 January window
Former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie personally congratulated the club’s current star Bruno Fernandes Tuesday after being named the 2020-21 Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.
Fernandes has bagged the prestigious award for the second time in less than 18 months since his arrival at Old Trafford from Sporting in January 2020. Since his debut last year, Fernandes has netted 40 goals and provided 25 assists in as many as 79 competitive appearances for the Red Devils.
The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder took very little time in becoming an integral part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, impressing fans and pundits across the globe. As soon as the Red Devils broke the Fernandes’ award’s news on social media, van Persie left a personal message for Fernandes on Twitter.
"Well deserved, what a player. Instant impact since the day he joined!" wrote van Persie on his official Twitter account.
Fernandes Wednesday responded to van Persie, who played for Manchester United between 2012 and 2015, calling the Dutchman a “legend”.
“Thank you legend!! Means a lot coming from you,” wrote Fernandes on his Twitter account.
Manchester United recently drew 1-1 against Fulham in the Premier League. After the game ended at Old Trafford, Fernandes spoke to the club’s media about winning the Sir Matt Busby award.
When Man Utd's media asked what winning the prestigious prize means to him, Fernandes responded," A lot. I always said that individual trophies are really good for players, It lifts you up, I would never say I don’t want individual trophies, but it’s not more important than a team trophy for me. But it’s always important. You’re doing something well, you’re doing something good, doing the right things means you can do a little bit more, improve a little bit more."
In the ongoing league campaign, Fernandes is only behind Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah in most goals scored. While Kane and Salah have netted 22 each, Fernandes has scored 18 goals in the Premier League, along with 11 assists.
"But, at the same time it means that the people are liking you, like the way you play, the way you trying to help the team, the way you do things, so that’s very important for me. But more important than that is winning a trophy at the end of the season and this is what it’s about because football is a team sport and for me it’s about winning trophies," added Fernandes in the same interview.
