Former NFL player Cierre Wood was arrested in Las Vegas on Wednesday and was facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter, police said Thursday. Wood was taken into custody at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas after La-Rayah Davis died Tuesday night.

Woods' girlfriend, 25-year-old Amy Taylor, was also arrested and charged with first-degree child abuse and neglect, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Jail records showed that Wood was being held without bail and he was scheduled to make his next court appearance Monday morning.

Authorities were yet to reveal other details about the young girl's death.

Wood, who is a native of Bloomington, California, played in just five regular-season games over his NFL career as a member of the Houston Texans, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills. He played three seasons for the Fighting Irish, recording 2,447 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. During his junior year in 2011, he rushed for 1,102 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Wood, who played in college at Notre Dame, most recently was released by the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes in 2017. He was traded to the Montreal Alouettes that May. He was released by Montreal in May of last year.
