On March 29th, 2020, the Heineken Formula 1 Johannesburg Festival, in partnership with Gauteng province, is going to treat the residents to a fan event and live car run.
The festival is going to give the fans the chance to see 2019 Formula 1 world championship runner-up Valtteri Bottas and F1 legend David Coulthard do a run through the streets of Sandton.
The championship officials had been evaluating if a return to Kyalami would be feasible.
Mercedes, Renault and Red Bull are going to bring the Formula 1 machinery to demonstrate the live runs.
South Africa’s only Formula 1 champion, Jody Scheckter, is also going to be present and will display his Ferrari 312T4 with which he won the 1979 championship.
Scheckter, the president of the South Africa GP, claims he is delighted to be a part of the event. He is very excited to be involved in what seems to be a great spectacle on the Joburg streets.
The Heineken Joburg festival is going to be broadcasted live on SuperSport, and it is going to feature live track activity from 1:30 pm with the Formula 1 live car run starting at 3:30 pm. From 5 pm, the attendees will experience some live music, and the festival will close at 8 pm.
Ellie Norman Formula 1 director of marketing and communications, stated they are excited to announce that Formula 1 is going to be heading to South Africa.
She also added that the country has a special place in Formula 1 history, and they remain committed to returning in the future. The festival is going to be an excellent opportunity for the locals to see Formula 1 up close, considering the fan experiences, live music, and live runs from some of the best in the sport.
Gerrit Van Loo, the managing director for Heineken South Africa, claimed the brand has had a long term association with Formula 1 on the global scene. They aim to show the world the way F1 is more than a race.
Morakane Mosupyoe, the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, claimed the province is an entertainment and business hub in the continent. The hosting of the first African F1 festival within the area bodes well for their objectives thus far.
