President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle have travelled to Fort Hood, Texas on Tuesday morning to attend the memorial service for the 13 slain in last week's shooting spree.

The president and his wife will meet with families of the deceased as well as the wounded and their families.

Obama will address the Fort Hood community at the memorial service which is scheduled to start at 1pm.

An army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, went on a shooting spree Thursday night at the Fort Hood army post in Texas killing 13 people and wounding 30.

Hasan was wounded and is reportedly recovering in hospital.
