Fort Lee Hit and Run: Charles J. Ann Arrested for Allegedly Mowing Down Aena Hong
Bergen County Prosecutor's announced the arrest of Fort Lee man in connection with the deadly hit-and-run that left a woman dead.
Police said that 26-year-old Charles J. Ann of 201 Bridge Plaza North in Fort Lee, N.J. has been charged with running over his 25-year-old girlfriend, Aena Hong. Police say Ann ran over Hong with his car several times around 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Inwood Terrace, reported CBS.
Witnesses allegedly told police that Hong was along Ann's car as the two were arguing. He sped off, turned around and accelerated as Hong was crossing the street. Ann drove over Hong three more times before driving away reported CBS.
Officers found Hong on the side of the road. She was transported to Holy Name Hospital where she pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m., reported Patch.
Just before the incident, the vehicle was observed to drive away from Ms. Hong and turn around, authorities said in a statement, reported Patch. As the victim was crossing the road, Charles Ann rapidly accelerated his motor vehicle, striking Ms. Hong.
After hitting Hong once, Ann allegedly put the car in reverse and backed over again. He then put his car in drive and went over again, going over the victim one more time. Police tracked down the Ann's 2011 Hyundai Sonata abandoned on 10th Street in Fort Lee just hours after the incident occurred.
Ann fled to Flushing, Queens, where he was located and arrested by detectives with help from the NYPD approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, reported Patch. He was found with a passport and large amount of money, possibly attempting to flee the country, reported Patch.
Hong was attempting to end her relationship with Ann. Authorities described it as a tumultuous dating relationship.
Ann was charged with first-degree murder. His bail was set at $3 million and is currently held in Queens Criminal Court.
